Human. A blog about being a nice person in a messy world.

Welcome to my blog!

Hi, friend. I hope you can find fun or helpful musings here for your journey.

There are two dynamics in life I have been thinking about lately:

Things happen to us.

And...

We happen to things.

How we respond to the first and how we are intentional about the second matters a great deal. At least, this is true for me in my journey.

In 2019, I made two New Year's Resolutions.

Resolution 1: I was going to cook dinner from scratch for my family 300 times in 365 days.

(I accomplished the goal by September 18, 2019)

Why cooking?
  • I wanted to learn how to cook more than Asian dishes

  • I wanted to establish time to be with my family every day instead of grinding away on work or projects whose outcomes didn't actually matter in the long run

Resolution 2: I was only going to write in pencil for the entire year unless I had to sign something in ink.

So why pencils?
  • They take you back to kindergarten

  • They smell good when you sharpen them

  • They are simple to understand

  • They have an eraser, so you can correct your mistakes–if you want to

The question followed: If I am only going to write in pencil for a whole year, what kind of pencil should I get?

I wanted to find the best pencil in the world. And I did. The Palomino Blackwing.

It is said Disney illustrators, writer John Steinbeck, and architect Frank Lloyd Wright (among many other remarkable people) were fans.

(I accomplished the goal by September 18, 2019)

So I ordered a couple of boxes of these $2 pencils and a sharpener.

I was instantly hooked. It has been a healthy addiction.

You should give it a whirl.

Funny. Since 2019, I've never stopped using pencils.

  • They help me be intentional

  • They help me focus

  • They help spark creative ideas

  • They take me back to kindergarten

  • They smell good when I sharpen them

  • They are simple to understand

  • They have an eraser, so I can correct my mistakes–if I want toYou should give it a whirl.Again.
